RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
