TikTok Grants Viewers Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that permits them to cut down on the amount of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the platform disclosed that it presently contains over 1 thousand million AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is being tested over the following weeks before a full-scale rollout. This development comes amid a surge in content created by AI, fueled by emerging video-generation tools.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Recent reports that nearly 10% of the quickest rising content creators on a popular video site only show clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this output is considered low-quality AI content, a term for inferior, mass-produced content that is frequently absurd or surreal.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers enjoy content created using AI tools, including digital art to educational videos, and we aim to provide users the ability to see more or less of that, based on their own likes,” stated a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok disclosed that there are presently 1.3bn videos on its app tagged as artificially created. In total, in excess of 100 million videos are submitted to the platform each day, making AI-generated material a relatively small part of its total content library.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the amount of AI content they watch by using the content preference feature in the platform and selecting AI-made media. Further subjects that are already be controlled under the setting include news, fashion, cosmetics, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its policies mandate content makers to label lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of celebrities or emergencies. Any believable artificial content that is not labeled can be deleted under its terms of service.

Additionally, the service will now add an “AI-made” watermark to content produced via its built-in AI features, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This action is intended to deter users from seeking to bypass the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

The company is also introducing a $2m awareness program for professionals and institutions to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will support educational bodies focused on teaching coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

The video-sharing app has defended its moderation strategy, during discussion over proposals to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in the United Kingdom. It is set to eliminate a significant number of roles in its trust and safety team in its British office, with labor groups and internet security professionals raising concerns that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A senior executive explained that people-led review would continue to be important, but AI can protect employees by eliminating the most harmful content before it gets reviewed by people. The company reported a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by safety staff over the past year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to unsafe media as rapidly, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us work at speed.”
