Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to contest particular decisions from the official, following the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
